The Irish MND research group has been active for 15 years, and has made many contributions to our understanding of Motor Neurone Disease.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) / Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and incurable neurological disorder that leads to muscle weakness and wasting.  Currently there is no known cure.

In 2006, the group identified a new gene for MND, which has opened an exciting a new direction in the search for effective treatments.

The aim of the MND Research Group is to provide high quality evidence based care in a multidisciplinary setting, and to engage in research at basic, translational and clinic level that will lead to the development both of new therapies and of meaningful improvements in quality of life of patients and their families.

Ongoing research into MND is the only way that new treatments will be found.  This site will give the reader an insight into the research that is currently taking place and the plans for the future.

Update from the 20th ALS/MND Symposium - Including photos from Berlin

Congratulations goes out to Prof. Orla Hardiman and her research team for recently being accepted into the NEALS (NORTHEAST Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) consortium. NEALS is based in the USA and among the many benefits of being accepted into this group is the consideration for NEALS clinical trial participation as new trials become active.  The Irish MND research group is delighted to be associated with NEALS.

As a member of the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations; a representative from the IMNDRF will be attending annual Meeting of the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations in Berlin on the 5th and 6th of Dec. During the meeting ALS/MND Associations from around the world share initiatives and develop strategies for fighting ALS/MND. Attendance is encouraged and people living with ALS/MND are welcomed as observer/participants in the meeting. Registration forms can be obtained here.

Interruption of Italian lithium carbonate trial in ALS due to lack of efficacy and serious concerns about toxicity.

The IMNDRF would like to commend Jimmy Magee, who told the nation about his personnal experience with MND while promoting the importance of research.  You can view his interview on the Late Late Show by clicking here.

The IMNDRF is affiliated with the new Irish Stem Cell Foundation. Check out The Irish Stem Cell patient Initiative Group for up to date information regarding stem cell cure research.

Promoting awareness of MND research is central to our mission.  Why not join us in our quest by supporting our facebook page and become an IMNDRF fan
