The family aggregation project is a comparison study between family histories of patients with MND and family histories of people where nobody has MND. Medical familly history questionnaires will be completed and in addition, DNA samples from each group will be examined and compared.

Dr. Susan Byrne, a Neurology Research Registrar will be carrying out a 3 year study which will scientifically look at the incidences of neurodegneratvie diseases in families who are affected by MND.

Why?
Looking at conditions that seem to run in families can help to find genes that increase susceptibility.

How will this benefit the MND population?
Information from this study may lead to identification of new genes that might be targeted in MND, and this in turn may help to find new treatments.

Who funds this project?
The cost over 3 years will be €215,000.

The 1st year target of €65,000 has been met by the kind support of the IMNDA in the amount of €56,000. The remainder was met by donations.

2nd year target is set at €75,000.
